Re: Laminated Stem in Barrelback 20

I agree, ply makes more sense, I just wondered if anyone had explored the method in a runabout before. And yes the reason was, I considered using mahogany as the outside couple layers for rounding of the cutwater somewhat. OK ...well maybe not dead on end grain. But your stem is a faired to a point ...

Re: Laminated Stem in Barrelback 20

I'm not sure how I'd be fairing into end grain, this construction method has been used traditionally in other style vessels from canoes to larger sailboats. I was just curious if anyone had tried it instead of ply. https://adirondackguideboat.files.wordpress.com/2017/07/bow-stem-showing-lamination.jpg

Re: Laminated Stem in Barrelback 20

Actually, I should've been more clear, laminating on a buck into the shape of the stem instead of laminating three pieces of plywood together.

Greg, I think we all laminated the stem as it is a pretty thick piece of stock

Laminated Stem in Barrelback 20

Just an off-the-wall idea but has anyone laminated the stem in a Barrelback?

Re: Newbie from Winder, Ga

I'm using some white oak milled from my land. I don't have quite as much usable as I thought (but plenty left over to use for furniture and other projects I build) so I'm supplementing with white oak from a buddy of mine who does all my milling. Gonna be tight. My barn is 16’ that I tied on too. Ove...

Re: Newbie from Winder, Ga

I feel ya. I'm doing the "shade tree boat build" too. My shop isn't large enough and I'm planning to get a portable carport to build my Barrelback under. See you around!

Re: Flywheel Forward Info

Awesome! I'll have to check it out! I checked the block casting and found that mine are 1958-1962 models. I need to find someone with knowledge about the early '60s Chris Craft Chevrolet 283 (flywheel forward) marine engines to help me with some information before I begin tearing them down. You may ...

Re: Rome, Ga. Barrelback

Got my first order of ring nails and screws from Glen-L today and have the first tentative name for the boat: "Escape Clause". This one may or may not survive 'til the end of the build but I've been told that "Sportin' Wood" ain't gonna cut it. As soon as this monsoon season is over we're going to s...

Re: Torpedo X 0.16

This is what I planned to do before I start on my full size Barrelback. I've been building models since I was in grade school. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=3786461979047&set=a.1030034670087&type=3&theater https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1721194828659&set=a.1030034670087&type=3&the...

The Crackerbox is the second of the two designs I was considering building. I chose the Barrelback so I'll be following along with you to vicariously experience it while I build mine!

Re: Rome, Ga. Barrelback

Well, I got a chance to look over my new plans last night and so far the only critique I have is that the template sheet came folded. I had hoped that after spending more than $230 they'd come rolled in a tube and not have folded creases in them. I know this may be a minor issue but for a "type A" b...
