Re: Strakes on a zip

65 hp merc. Prop 11x 17 but I need to keep the weight below about 850lbs and I'm not sure I can do that. I'm probably dreaming at 50 but 45 might be more realistic. I'm already adding more wood and glass than the original plans. Hopefully flipping the hull in a couple weeks.

Strakes on a zip

I'm looking for thoughts and opinions on whether its a good Idea to add strakes or makes no difference. I plan on being able to hit 45-50 mph top speed and cruise speed about 30-35 mph. My thought was maybe they would give a little better control since I will run at a bit higher speed than most. The...

where to get chrome work done.

I was wondering if anyone has info on where I can get the front cover of my 1974 merc 650 re-chromed. It's plastic.

Re: 65 HP long shaft on a zip

Thanks for the pics and info. I think my plan for now is to add 2 more hull battens and 2 more knees and put kevlar cloth between the layers of transom. I will have a well also. I will have too figure out my spacing for the extra battens. I'd like to run them as far forward as possible but that will...

Re: 65 HP long shaft on a zip

One other quick thought. If the 65hp doesn't seem to work out I can easily down size. I would rather that than try to up size. Looked at ski tow, sticking with the zip.

Re: 65 HP long shaft on a zip

Yes you are correct it is the 3 cylinder. but it does have power tilt/trim also. Roberta thanks for the Ideas. What is the best way to see your pics. I'll look at the ski tow. but I already bought the plans for the zip.

Re: 65 HP long shaft on a zip

Here are a few reasons why. First it was what came on the donor boat and it was cheap and in good condition needs only regular maintenance to come back to life. Also yes I want to go fast. But I also want to be able to cruise at about 30mph without running up the rpms on an old motor. And every once...

65 HP long shaft on a zip

Does anyone have any thoughts about me putting a 1974 Merc. 65hp long shaft on a zip. I'm going to be starting my build in the next month. I saw a post about putting steel strut rods and adding more battens but I'm wondering if anyone else has any Ideas. I feel the motor well will be a bit of a chal...

Re: New member

I've been doing quite a bit of reading already but that is now on my list. I'm not new to boats just wooden. Have good amount of experience with epoxies and glass cloth. So that part is good for now. How do I get hold of people near me to ask where they got the wood they used to build with. I've don...

Hello from central Texas. I just ordered plans for the zip. I plan on putting a 1974 Merc 650 on it. Anyone got any advice before I start building. Also I'm new to forums so if I do something wrong let me know. Thanks
