Re: Adding length to the Chinook cabin

Thanks for your reply Kens I plan to religiously (not literally) stay with the hull specifications but I would be useful to have a slightly longer cabin The Christmas holidays have given me a few days R&R so I might be able to trace out some of the rib patterns Have a wonderful holiday and my thanks...

Adding length to the Chinook cabin

I am seeking advice concerning lengthening the cabin of the Glen-L Chinook design
The pilot house design really works well for me but, I would ideally like to add say 1.5 to 2 feet to the space inside the cabin
Any advice out there from anyone?

Remarkable film building ships by hand in WWII

I am unsure if this is an acceptable topic, but this is how my countrymen built Wooden Mine Sweepers and Air-Sea rescue boats in 1943 In some respects it's rather quaint and definitely dated, but to see those fellows cutting, planning and adzing by hand is quite inspirational The URL for this 12 min...

Re: Preferred width of side planking

Thanks for your input I am new to the Glen L "full size" patterns which only outline the outer edge of the frames I was hoping to get some idea of the widths of the plywood siding, by measuring the side of the frames - above and below the chine Once I have examined these more closely that should ind...

Re: Installing a strong towing eye

Thanks for the examples which more or less confirm what was planning to do. Reinforcing, backing, using robust bracing are all part of my plan
Appreciate the time you have given me

Re: Help needed working with Glen L plans

Thanks Lee
I plan to keep everything tied down to my garage floor until such time as I have a stable skeleton- braced and measured
Installing castors will be necessary but your advice will be well taken. Unsure about using a laser though....

Happy Christmas

Re: Preferred width of side planking

Thanks for the reply from Oregon...sorry I did not have your first name.... I first need to figure out how wide a piece of ply we need between the sheer and the upper chine Once I know that measurement it will determine how wide a piece of ply I need to scarf So much wisdom on this Glen-L site....mi...

Re: Help needed working with Glen L plans

That is exactly what we are planning Barry. I have about 25 feet x 10 feet to work inside and before we build the frame I will fabricate as much as possible and then start on the frame. Ideally we would like to have frames, stem etc built over next summer and move into the garage before the snow fli...

Re: Installing a strong towing eye

Thanks Barry
I was planning to use something similar but I am concerned that bolting through three laminates endwise will not be that strong because it comes through the end grain. What I may do is back the inside with a stainless plate rather than simple washers

Thanks and best regards

Preferred width of side planking

I am studying my plans for the Chinook For the side planking the material list indicates using sheets of 3/8 4' x 21' plywood To achieve this length (21') I will need to Scarf the ply - which will make for a very long, wide and unwieldy sheet (and hard to scarf that length) Would it not be better to...

Installing a strong towing eye

I am trying to figure out how to incorporate a strong towing eye into the laminated plywood stem of the boat I am hoping to build With three pieces of laminated ply sections making up the stem - what is the best way to approach this considering I will be working with a weak end-grain of the ply ? Th...
