Nope, not a peep was heard on my end, and I spoke with Hector on Friday and he sure would have mentioned it! Even for a pre-launch, I would have loved to have been there. However, I had just taken the new Georgia Contractor's licensing exam and was a little wrung-out mentally, plus Janet was out tha...

Don - thanks for the advice on laminating. I deliberately built my steambox to avoid any pressure buildup, so I don't see an easy way to accomplish that. Probably easier to add time than to add pressure. However, your other thoughts bring up a possible alternative answer... That frame with the big s...

Bill's steam bending tests

While I've been doing all this bottom & keelson work, I've been busy as well getting ready to replace all those frames. I had posted earlier about having built my steambox and how my kiln-dried white oak failed the bend tests. I figured there were three possible primary causes for the bending failur...

I have to agree -- a great list, and I missed it on the first go-round. Another related tip I'd like to throw out there has to do with keeping a workshop. If your shop is anything like mine when I'm not using it regularly (and sometimes when I am), It gets overrun with STUFF. Odds & ends that I pick...

Bill E I've noticed a lot of people use a pvc or metal steam box,do you think maybe your wood box absorbs too much steam that should be going into the wood? Maybe leave it in longer because of that? I've never used a steam box,but just some random thoughts to keep me from going to work on projects ...

Bill, you spose he's got some big pine ?? 12 x 12 or so. Thinking of putting up some "faux" freaking beams in the dining/living/sitting/kitchen room. If I can get them at about 12 x 12 or larger I can hand hew them to give them the "proper" look. Steve Actually, yes. He has a few roughly 12x12 anti...

STeve - thanks for the FWW suggestion. I don't know why I don't check there first. Kens - here's a quote from a FWW article found here Wood will bend when steamed at a temperature of about 200°F. The length of time it must steam depends on the thickness of the workpiece; it can range anywhere from 2...
