Try hot water.
I procured some hypodermic syringes with the largest needle I could find and they work well with filling tiny holes.

What about using foam wrapped in wax paper? It would be strong enough yet could easily be broken up and removed in pieces.

I had a shaft work its way back and forth due to loose set screws, fortunately there was no catastrophic failure but on another occasion the shaft sheared off between the coupling and the stuffing box!!! I used automotive panel fasteners to secure the side crash pads. They are readily available at almost all auto parts stores. There are many sizes to choose from.
