Re: 16' Ski Boat Restoration

Here is a shot of it with a fresh coat of epoxy. I'm getting some air bubbles from the West Systems 800 roller. I never got them before but they will sand out...Just sorta annoying. Since it is veneer I am doing a "book match" on the other rail of the boat so they will be mirror images of each other...

Re: 16' Ski Boat Restoration

I have been working on replacing the old rail where the throttle is mounted. This also serves to hold up a portion of the deck. I scored a deal on some nice block figured Makore veneer so I decided to use it for the cockpit. Since I was veneering it I didn't want to use a solid wood substrate due to...

Re: 16' Ski Boat Restoration

The boat had ~10 gal integral fiberglass gas tanks (one on each side). I read that ethanol will eat the old fiberglass resin therefore I decided to cut them out and replace them with stainless steel tanks. I made some templates of the hull at each end of the tank out of 1/4" scrap ply that I had lay...

Re: 16' Ski Boat Restoration

Here is some rot on the stern which was chiseled out and then repaired with West System Epoxy 105/205 + 405 sanded down with the Rotex.

Re: 16' Ski Boat Restoration

Here are some shots while removing the old fiberglass and veneer from the deck. It came off reasonably easy using a sharp putty knife. I then used the Festool Rotex to take on the spots down where the glue held better.

16' Ski Boat Restoration

So here is the "Other Woman" that I have been seeing on the side. I have been neglecting my 17' Overnighter Sloop Build for a faster gal. My wife is enabling my decision as she digs speed over the serenity of sailing. Is it allowed to post non-Glen-L boat restoration progress here? She is a 16' Ski ...

Re: Glen-L 17 overnighter sloop build

After removing the Amine blush with a scotch-brite pad and dish soap+water (which worked well) I sanded to 80 Grit on 1/2 of the hull with my Bosch ROS20VS sander to give the fiberglass + epoxy something to bite into. The use of a respirator was required and the cloud of epoxy dust hung thick in the...

Re: Glen-L 17 overnighter sloop build

So I am slacking a tad....I just took off the amine blush following the epoxy encapsulation after 4.5 months!!! Eager to get her fiberglassed now!

Attached are the pictures of the pair of Appalachia ladderback chairs that I just finished which took a front seat to the boat build...

Re: New Glen-L 14 Build

I would get a 12" disc sander and not try to bastardize a table saw but that just me...I get all my stuff on craigslist for a great deal...I got a delta 12" for $50.The grizzly is not terrible: https://www.amazon.com/Grizzly-G7297-Disc-Sander-12-Inch/dp/B0000DD6AX/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1484876054&s...

Re: New Glen-L 14 Build

That's a good first project; looks good. I am an Engineer as well (Electrical) and love woodworking. One observation I noticed (hope you don't mind the nit pick) that the finish looks like it's not taking where your glue joints are. I think you may have had some glue squeeze out that did not get ful...

Glen-L 17 overnighter sloop build

Hi All, I thought I would share some (small :D )progress with you on my Glen-L 17 overnighter sloop. You may recall from my new member introduction that I bought it from a friend who had completed the planking but it was un-faired. It took a whole lot of sanding and epoxy to get her faired! and she ...
