Zip = Progress Photos and Questions

Hi Again, Few quick questions if I may, before I forget what they are. It appears that the top horizontal member in the frame at location '4', by default, becomes the 'dashboard'. If this is the case I may want to consider a 'prettier' material and not have to 'double up' and add weight with a 'seco...

Re: Zip project finally started

Thanks for the response. Seriously thought of a 'speedboat' for the old merc, but decided I'm a little to old for that now.

Re: Zip project finally started

Thanks so much for all the helpful and encourage replies. Hopefully I have foreshortened the honey do list to give me more time on the boat. From the reading I've done here I'm hoping that by spring of next year I'll be at the stage for 'glassing' or epoxing the hull. Here in Raleigh that would seem...

Zip project finally started

Finally started the Zip project I've been getting ready for, if you call buying some wood for the frame parts and preparing a platform upon which to build the boat starting. Will try and post a couple of phots of the platform if I can remember how. The main part of the platform was a 4x4 'ladder' th...

Re: Zip Keel

Thank you gentlemen. Life experiences like yours are more valuable than text books. Have to go out of town with the missus this weekend, and hopefully knock enough items off the 'honey do' list the following weekend to, finally, then get started on my own 'ZIP". Already designing the dash/center con...

Re: Zip Keel

Thanks for the reply, I have admired your ZIP.Wondered if there would be any potential drawbacks to running the skeg as long as the keel is straight, and or any drawbacks to running the skeg full length as a 'bumper guard'. Also thought that by capturing the lower panel in the slot in the keel/skeg ...

Zip Keel

My name is Garfield and I found this site years ago and have been 'popping in' a lot. I will soon be starting to build a Zip. The last two years had a big geographical move and I just finished restoring a 1959 Mercury Mark 35A. I actually have a question before I start, about the keel, since it seem...

Just discovered that I can get a ready made stainless steel tilt tube, one less processing step.

Re: ZIP & Mercury Mark 35A - Steering

Thank you Mr. Shipley! Maybe I don't have 'old timers' yet. If it means anything I plan on building a ZIP once I get done with the Mark 35A, and for what it's worth I have the photo album of your ZIP build on my most visited bookmark bar. Glad you got back to me, waiting for the paint that's on it's...

ZIP & Mercury Mark 35A - Steering

I've been absent for a bit as we relocated from CT to NC. Currently restoring Mercury Mark 35A circa 1959 for the ZIP I will build next. Mark 35A tilt tube is 1/2" ID - will a teleflex steering system work with this tilt tube? I'm sure I found somewhere here before that someone had the same motor an...

hello all

Newbie to this forum. Was 'given' a lovely 1960 Mercury 35 hp/4 cyl. outboard by my uncle. Have replaced the water pump impeller and bottom end seals and all the rest seems to be running fine. So much for the easy part. Now need to build a boat to suit the motor. Looking at the ZIP. Hope to back her...
