Mahogany Opinions

What are the differences between a nice wooden boat and a drop-dead gorgeous, jaw-dropping, wooden boat? What is it that you like more about one boat than another? What makes you stop in your tracks and say, "Oh my gosh, that is beautiful"?

Re: Mahogany

From what little I have read on this forum, it seems that most folks resaw mahogany boards for their planking and decking. Does anybody ever use rotary cut veneer mahogany for their planking and decking?

Re: Let's demystify some of these boat finishes

Sorry to disappoint BayouBengal, but my experience is limited to nitrocellulose lacquer and some oil finishes for wood furniture. I know nothing about varnish, and my experience with paint is that just like the cliche, 90% of a good paint job is in the prep. And I have learned about lacquer the hard...

Re: Barrel Zip

Thanks Gary, for sharing that. I am starting to understand why you and Roberta recommend the Tahoe. What CAD software are you using to make your drawings?

Re: Tom's Tahoe

Sorry, I don't have any answers to your questions, nor do I even understand them, but what I want to tell you is that the boat in the photo is gorgeous!

Re: Let's demystify some of these boat finishes

From Dave: “So I really think that spraying on a finish is likely very intimidating.” I use nitrocellulose lacquer on furniture, and I brush it on, even though spraying with an HVLP is quicker, more accurate, and more consistent, because I am completely unconfident in my ability to clean out a solve...

Re: Roberta's Torpedo

"I really don't know except it looks nice." I get this. It does look nice. The contrast with the mahogany planking is gorgeous.

Re: Barrel Zip

Roberta, again thanks. I think I now understand more of what the tumblehome is. I have no thoughts of changing the location of the engine. It just looked to me that the engine on the Tahoe is located more towards the middle of the boat than the Barrelback. And for no good or experienced reason, I as...

Re: Roberta's Torpedo

What is the purpose of the caulk and deck seams? On the hull it seems the planks are joined flush to one another. Why aren't the deck planks joined flush to one another? And why the large, (1/4" or 3/8"), space between the deck planks? And why caulking? Why not white epoxy? If the answers to the abo...

Re: Barrel Zip

Thanks Roberta. Are you suggesting the Tahoe 19 because the "tumbledown" is similar to the Riva Ariston? And, am I using the term "tumbledown" correctly? I actually like the engine layout in the Tahoe 19 more than Barrelback, because It would seem to my thoroughly uneducated in boats mind, that loca...

Re: Barrel Zip

Hi, I am going to build a barrelback. That was not easy to say/write. I have long admired Chris Craft type runabouts from the 20's through the 50's, but have never considered building one because they look quite complicated, I have less than no experience with boatbuilding, and it never occurred to ...
