Re: Biss's Malahini Build

Starting to think about paint... I'm planning to prime and paint with system 3. I will be priming with their yacht primer and top with wr lpu. I assume a gallon will be plenty for the primer, but I'm not sure about the bottom paint. Does anybody know how much paint it takes to cover the bottom to th...

Re: Biss's Malahini Build

Well, Ive been busy fiberglassing this week. I finished applying glass Thursday night. I sanded the entire hull this morning. Basicslly feathered the glass overlaps and knocked down the high spots. I then applied a coat of epoxy to all the surfaces. I came up with a pretty good technique for applyin...

Re: 20ft Texas Barrel

Matt, The boat is coming along nicely! I saw the post regarding your service, Wanted to thank you for that. I spent the first 16yrs of my career designing and building countermeasures for military aircraft. Spent a lot of time trying to protect the 130's (as well as many others!). The 130's always p...

Re: Malahini Chine bending

Looks like you have a really nice finish on your boat! I know you must be excited about flipping it over and starting the next phase. Best of luck working out your trailer configuration.

Re: Biss's Malahini Build

Thanks for the replies. Using the tape works perfectly; makes for a really nice edge. I will be feathering the edge along the keel and applying the other side tonight. I'm using System3 Silvertip w/ fast hardener. Apparently this epoxy system does not produce the amine blush and has a recoat window ...

Thanks Matt.

I put a coat of epoxy over the entire hull yesterday and put the first piece of fiberglass on tonight.

Re: Biss's Malahini Build

Its been awhile since I posted an update. I guess that's because I don't have much to report! I did receive the Total Fair and I have to say it is great stuff. It dries fairly fast and sands like a dream. So that is what I've been doing - filling holes, etc. and sanding. I finished filling/sanding t...

Thanks for all the info. I ordered some of the Total Fair to try. I'll be ordering the fiberglass and epoxy this weekend.

Re: Biss's Malahini Build

Thanks, I have watched a few of those videos. They are really good! I have also looked at your build! It is coming along nicely!

Did you buy the fiberglass kit thru GlenL? Also what did you use for fairing compound?

Others please comment on what you used as well.

Re: Hello from Houston, TX!

Congrats on the new boat project! I'm building the Malahini as well. Started my build back in July. This is the first boat for me, so its been an experience. Best of luck with your project. The info on this forum is very beneficial. Also, if you haven't picked up the book 'Boatbuilding with Plywood'...

Re: Biss's Malahini Build

Well I got the forward bottom planking on. A wrestling match it was! I used hot water/towels to help with the tight bends. Forward of the transition joint, I transferred the cut line to the outside of the ply and actually cut with a reciprocating saw while the panel was in place. I then refined the ...

Re: Biss's Malahini Build

Thanks again for the compliments! So I insatalled the other aft bottom panel. I also glued in the butt blocks. I guess I will try to tackle the forward bottom planking this weekend. This looks like it will be really 'fun.'

Re: Biss's Malahini Build

Thanks for the compliments. I cut the first piece of wood on July 22nd and have spent approxmately 80 hrs working on it to date. All the work has been done on weekends and evenings. It really helped me, I think, by reviewing several other boat builds, mostly malahini and zip, before I started as wel...

Re: Biss's Malahini Build

Thanks for the encouragement. Since my last post I've installed the side planking, faired the side planking to the chine, and installed one aft piece of bottom planking. Lots and lots of screw in the bottom planking. Wasn't sure if is was going to get them all in before the glue started to gel, but ...
