Re: Plug For The Boat Building With Plywood Book

Agree 100% Carl. I read it cover to cover twice before starting. This was not only to learn..but also to give my wife fair warning that I was serious about doing this thing. Every time she saw me reading it she became a little more desensitized to the awfulness of the idea of losing the garage and a...

Re: MI Malahini Build, Post Flip.

So cool - congratulations!....my guess is that knowing you have incredible reliability is a great relief.

I'm sure you will figure the trim out. For myself, I am resigned to porpoising, I will either describe it as a design feature or throw some trim tabs on there! :D

enjoy the weekend.

Re: Malahini from MD

thanks guys. windshield: I would like to go with a curved windshield with some height. I've been looking at this site https://www.updplastics.com/windshield-manufacturers/ I will have to reach out to them to figure out how to measure for the malahini, most things seems quite straightforward - just w...

Re: Malahini from MD

Hey Footer - thanks for asking. It seems like I've done nothing much for the last few weeks - we had our family vacation to Maine. Although I didn't have my boat with me - we towed up a little jon boat and had the use of a bow rider - so lots of messing about on the water. When I got back my daughte...

Re: Lee's Monaco utility build

A good scarf is a thing of beauty and one you will be proud of.....they're not so bad to do on lumber, even completely by hand. If you ever watch SampsonBoatCo's restoration of TallyHo on youtube, or AcornToArabella on youtube you'll see some beautiful scarfs on massive lumber. If you don't watch th...

Re: Malahini from MD

yeah....just a touch of sanding needed! this is after a quick first pass of a little hand planing, followed by 40g, essentially getting everything fair. Likely will go down to ~120ish. Was then planning on installing the coaming and raised trim, a final sand, staining, then knock the stain dow...

Re: Malahini from MD

and...something a little different.....a book. A friend bought this for me. It's about an older dad who builds a boat for his young daughter. It's a quick read that I quite enjoyed - although at one point the author does say something like 'building in plywood pales in comparison to building a clink...

Re: Malahini from MD

worked on the coaming (not sure if this is strictly coaming...) - getting there, although still a ways to go. also did a little more on the raised rail around the bow, which I'm still not sold on, but will try extending down to around the windshield...it's just laying on there at the moment, not att...

Re: Malahini from MD

Thanks Footer - still not sure about these - but might play around with them over the next week or so. Your boat is looking fantastic. You and Biss (and all those before you) have been great to follow - both a few months ahead of me. Have been working on the coamings (or at least the L shaped trim c...

Re: Malahini from MD

Hi Footer - yes...that's where I was too, I don't think anyone would notice but it bugged me, so I planed off two boards and replaced. Barring any issues all the deck boards are now down. I just routed off all the interior overhang. Then, I think the last 'major' bit of new woodworking will be to pu...

Re: Malahini from MD

good advice - I will definitely do that. This weekend I'm going to try and finish the aft decking. I made the mistake of putting some of this on late at night and didn't do a good job on the alignment of the planks - so the port and startboard are ~1/2" different, which is noticeable where they line...

Re: Malahini from MD

so..I bought a trailer. In the end I went new, and bought a Karavan trailer from a place just outside of Baltimore. I have one inch of clearance on either side to get it into my garage. Did some work on the fore deck this week. I have to say I really enjoyed this part. Hopefully finish the a...
