Re: Malahini from MD

Hey Tom. Thanks - I’m pretty pleased with how it’s shaping up. The riva windshield is what made me think of taking this on. I suspect (but don’t know) that glass is going to break the bank, so was planning on duraplex or similar. Thoughts welcome...

Re: Mist Miss - Desert Build

Stationary belt and disc sander is the no1 piece of equipment I wish I’d bought. That and a decent band saw. I went cheap and it was useless....

Great work on the tent and benches...

Re: Malahini from MD

This weekend I decided to remake the windshield frame. I didn’t feel like it extended far enough, which gave it a steep angle, and I wanted to make it out of mahogany. So - planed down some off cuts, steamed them using the wallpaper steamer and plastic bag method, then bent around a mold. Then epoxi...

Re: Malahini from MD

Started to fit the transom bands. For these I just bought some stainless cut to size on the Internet, then shaped it using a belt sander. I will have to take it off and epoxy the holes

Re: Building The Vera Cruise

Looking fantastic...great progress! Thanks for posting these updates, I enjoy reading them. I know you are interested in a dust collection system - I purchased a harbor freight dust collector, put a filter on the top (Wynn environmental 35BA222NANO, see https://wynnenv.com/woodworking-filters/harbor...

Re: Malahini from MD

Thanks footer... getting the 1.25" rub rail bent around the bow was definitely a two person job.

I am thinking of extending the length of the windshield frame - so may try redoing the steaming and lamination. We'll see. The good part is I have another few months, so I'm in no particular rush!

Re: Malahini from MD

This only other thing I did was to install a keel roller on the very front of my trailer. You can see it in the photos above. Still a bunch left to do ... Steering, engine, cleats, gas filler, hinge on the trailer tongue, making a cutwater, transom bands etc etc.... :D

Couple more. Not sure if this angle is right. Perhaps shallower would be better

Re: Malahini from MD

Did a few things over the last week or so. Put the sole back in and made the hatch and trim. Next up my wife and I installed some 1/2 oval rub rail on the starboard side. Lastly I worked on the windshield a little. Some photos below

Re: Malahini from MD

Good question footer. I’ve been trying something out - not sure if it will take. I have made up a windshield frame using laminations of Douglas fir steam bent. Some pictures below - I did the streaming in a plastic bag using a wallpaper steamer. That part worked really well.

Still a ways to go.

Re: Malahini from MD

So it doesn't look like much has happened since I last posted - but I feel like I've done a fair amount. Mainly working on the deck - finished off the lines, epoxy, then 5 coats of perfection plus. It is not perfect - but I have definitely reached the good enough is good enough stage (if it looks go...

Re: Malahini from MD

Just a small amount of progress since the last post. I laid down two coats of CPES on the deck and two coats of epoxy - now I am starting to put down some of the white lines, using epoxy with microbeads. A couple of things I'll have to work on - I had some pretty pronounced fish-eyes on the epoxy. I...
