Re: Boating Accident in Alabama

Wow! Thanks for the story and letting everyone know you are okay. Every spring, we have logs floating in our lake too. It is controlled by TVA and they lower it beginning late August through March. When they raise it, all the logs that fell into the water from winter float. By June, I don't normally...

Re: Name,transom bands

Hey Lads, I know these old Mercs are beautiful to look at, but when you get tired of messing about with them, just go out and get yourself a white E-Tec. It starts instantly (they guarantee w/in one turn of the crank or something like that) and it is ready to go. I know the vintage look is important...

Re: Where to start...

Wow that is a beautiful lake Iggy. Please do post some photos. Our lake is in the mountains and I had to tow up a steep and twisty road up to 3000ft and then back downhill to 2000ft. I have a Tahoe and I just selected the tow switch on the transmission and it was like there was nothing behind me.

Re: New member... considering building my first boat

Hmm, you like old Shepherd outboards? Well feast your eyes on this one. It is also 16ft just like a Malahini. I think it may have a little more freeboard than a Malahini. These photos are from the 2012 ACBS show at Lake Dora:

Re: MAS resin and low-tox hardener

As far as epoxy allergies go... Skin contact is the issue!! I respectfully disagree. I am extremely allergic to the fumes. Even wearing a full plastic suit, gloves and organic respirator the skin on my face gets red and irritated similar to poison ivy. My eye lids dry out, crack and bleed - not a p...

Re: What is Okoume plywood?

My first build was a kayak from a Chesapeake Light Craft kit. It was mostly Okoume and it was high quality stuff and in my experience, very easy to work with (excuse my poor grammar using a preposition to end my sentence).

Re: gas tank placement

Maybe you could install a couple of small clam shell vents and mount a fire extinguisher to one side. Coasties also love fire extinguishers.

Re: MAS resin and low-tox hardener

I've used lots of MAS and it has worked quite well for me on my Glen-L boat and my Chesapeake Light Craft boat. It is advertised as having no amine blush and I never had a problem. I can also use it without any allergic reactions which I developed with some of the others. I can't go near West Epoxy ...

Re: Attn Georgia: Lake Chatuge Antique and Classic Boat Show

Well Crap!!! I just found out that Sunday, June 8 is the day my oldest daughter is leaving for a summer job in Maine. So, I won't be at the Lake Chatuge Boat Show this year. It is more important that I spend that weekend with her.

Re: Is it common to stretch a Zip?

I agree with the previous post. If you want longer, just build a Malahini. As was already stated, it has more beam and I believe it also has a little more free board. But, there is something about the Zip hull that I find a little more sexy than the Malahini. If you need extra space though, you shou...

Re: have you used glue other than what the plans say

Everything that was supposed to be epoxy on mine is epoxy. However, I did use TiteBond glue on my dash. My dash was a solid piece of mahogany which was beautiful. But, I wanted some contrast and I veneered it with a piece of Tiger Striped Maple. But all structural pieces were glued with West epoxy. ...

Re: Mahogany runabout build in pictures

Really cool stuff. I have seen your website before. I noticed all the bulkheads and forward compartments in these photos and on your website. Are those compartments watertight? Also, what's the deal with your user name? Were you formerly a microbiologist?
