Re: plywood alternative

^^Yeah I know it is, just not sure if it's as easy to work with as Douglas Fir marine grade plywood and whether or not it's as strong, etc.

Re: plywood alternative

I'm wondering about this too--Can you use marine meranti instead of marine grade plywood? I can get 6mm thickness (which is just about identical to 1/4"). I'll have to check how many layers it is but that's 10 bucks or more cheaper a sheet so it'll shave quite a bit off the price of raw materials.

Re: Modifying the Flying Saucer: Questions (Please help!)

Quick question, Planning on stretching it 10% for a bit smoother ride and more weight capacity...It says on the Flying Saucer page that you can do this as long as you don't increase the beam and has a little blip about how to do so...Anyone have any in-depth details as to how to do this though? I ju...

Re: Modifying the Flying Saucer: Questions (Please help!)

While I do want to still go jet, I don't think it'll be wise to add the complexity and one-off thinking required to my first boat build. I do agree there's about 18" to be had or so in removing the motor well, not to mention that if you are stretching it a foot and a quarter as I am you'll also like...

Re: Modifying the Flying Saucer: Questions (Please help!)

My wife bought me the plans for the Flying Saucer for my birthday. Looks like I may have some other boat-related gifts on the way as well. Ideally I would like to get the frame built before winter but we'll see. Either way I'm glad to be making some headway on this project. The plans look great!

Re: Modifying the Flying Saucer: Questions (Please help!)

Hey guys, Over the last several months life has been pretty tumultuous but has smoothed out. Lost my job right around Christmas but managed to get in at a nearby place doing similar work within a month and a half. That being said, the project is back on. My birthday is in a month and I'm hoping to g...

Re: Modifying the Flying Saucer: Questions (Please help!)

Yeah, I'm more concerned with the overall length of the system than the width. If I can employ a system like yours where the engine sits right on the drive that'd help quite a bit and would certainly make it more of a drop-in affair. It'll not be easy by any means but a close friend of mine owns a w...

Re: Modifying the Flying Saucer: Questions (Please help!)

Yeah it's pretty amazing how much the exhaust can influence a two stroke. I ride snowmobiles in the winter and I know about messing with that stuff--unless you have a really good understanding of it, don't. So far the size seems to be the main issue, I know the beam is 5'9" but it tapers down to a m...

Re: Modifying the Flying Saucer: Questions (Please help!)

Bump, does anyone have those dimensions? I would rather not waste the money on the plans for the flying saucer if the setup is too long and would make the rear seats too narrow to be usable with a motor box in the middle of the rear section.

Thanks,

Re: Modifying the Flying Saucer: Questions (Please help!)

Forgot if I asked this or not, but what's the width of a conventional jet drive motor at its widest point (in the front of the engine)?

Thanks,

Re: Modifying the Flying Saucer: Questions (Please help!)

Sweet. I guess all I really need to know to find out if it's practical or not is what the dimension is for the flying saucer--anyone have that? (transom to rear seat, approx.) I like the jet drive outboard as an option if this doesn't work out, provided that is shallower than a conventional short sh...

Re: Modifying the Flying Saucer: Questions (Please help!)

That would be a big help if you wouldn't mind measuring. Does anyone know how long the factory transom/engine mount is? Meaning the back of the rear seat to the transom? Like I was saying I was expecting to keep the cockpits the same size just move them forward (or add the 10% behind the rear seats ...

Re: Modifying the Flying Saucer: Questions (Please help!)

jprice, what do you mean by a jet drive outboard? not familiar with that style of engine. I just chose that particular arrangement because of its availability (plenty of 500-750cc jet skis available under a grand in this area) and compact design. Vu, thanks for the pics. If you have any more of the ...

Modifying the Flying Saucer: Questions (Please help!)

Hello all, Just signed up for the forum. I wanted to know if anyone had done a jet drive on the flying saucer. I would like to keep the twin cockpit, put the steering wheel on the front right seat, and use a 500-750cc jet ski motor. In order to achieve this I would like to lengthen it by 10% and try...
