Building Oars

Post by Jim Anderson »

I'm going to build oars for my 15' power-row skiff. I have the Glen-L plans for oars. It calls for gluing two 3/4" thick pieces of the entire length & width (mine will be 9' long) and the plans call for 5" blade width. I'm thinking to use 1/4" marine plywood as an inner core and laminate multiple various lengths to stagger joints to start out with the 9' x 2 1/4" x 5" width then shape. Sound OK to use PW as a core?

Sounds like a good plan. I would suggest to orient the plywood with the face grain running across the width of the oar. This will give more fibers holding the paddle to the shaft.
