Chine notches on the Chinook

Post by SDSparky » Sun Dec 16, 2018 12:10 am

I’m having a hard time visualizing how much of the forward frames will be faired off at the chine junctions. The chines are touching the forward face of the notch while the frames aft face has a gap. I’m hesitant to rasp the angle deeper, but that may be correct. The inner chine is 3-13/16” net square pieces with a 3/4” sq. filler at the outer edge. It’s definitely is getting interesting as the chine twist towards the bow. And I still don’t understand how the inner and outer chine come together. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

Notches need to be cut at an angle so the highest part of the chine is even with the frame. Then the frame is faired to the angle of the chine. Very little, if any, of the chine is faired away. Generally the chines are left pretty much alone except at the bow and to even the shape to coincide with the bottom and side of the frame.

In the pic attached I used a block the shape of the chine to use in shaping the angles in chine notches. Running a board from frame tp frame will help in establishing the compound angles the chines run.

You definitely have an unusual chine system. Not sure if I'm helping any.
