Re: Pee Wee Build
I am building a zip and I specifically looked for a 2 cycle. Although 2 cycles can be a little more finicky, they do have a HP to weight advantage. The 50 HP 2 cycle I landed weighs around 185 pounds. New 4 stroke 50 HP seem to weigh between 215 and 250 pounds. I figured for a small boat, the two cycle was the way to go (at least for me).
Re: Pee Wee Build
If you're talking a 5-10hp (15hp if you're keen!) outboard, i would have thought 2-stroke because the extra weight of a 4 stroke wouldn't be welcome on such a small boat?
Re: Pee Wee Build
So spring has arrived and the weather has been beautiful. I dragged out the project today and gave it a coat of paint but I need help guys? I have completed 2 coats of epoxy undercoat but, as my partner described it, the hull looks lumpy. I must have done a crappy filling job and it looks shocking. What can I do? Will fiberglassing over the top now help smooth it out at all or isnt this possible??
Re: Pee Wee Build
Its perfectly sound as is but a few days elbow greese will give you that smooth finish you are after.
Did you fiberglass prior to this paint coat or just a couple coats of Epoxy underneath?
Sand like crazy to smooth it out, long board and a random orbit sander will work well. If you fiberglassed it dont sand through the fiberglass. If no fiberglass dont sand into the actual wood.
Sand down the high spots then you can apply more epoxy coats to fill the low spots and sand some more. Repeat as necessary and be happy that the boat isnt any bigger! Spend a few days on this step and you should be much happier with the results and will be ready to apply the paint again.

Re: Pee Wee Build
Looks pretty good! Good to see progress. Good luck finding the time to sand it to perfection.

If you add fiberglass, ... you will need to sand off ALL the paint first.hzchevy wrote:Will fiberglassing over the top now help smooth it out at all or isnt this possible??

Re: Pee Wee Build
Quick update on the progress. Ive been sanding and painting for the last 2 weeks but its slow going when your watching paint dry.
Re: Pee Wee Build
You guys have been a great help to date so here is my next question. What type of steering
system can I use for my peewee?. I have a Mercury outboard to be used. Obviously I need a very short cable system but what is best? Rotary or Rack and what brand? Thanks again.

Re: Pee Wee Build
That's one FINE looking boat you have there. Well done and great workmanship.

By the time I have built a boat, I'll be ready to build a boat....
Re: Pee Wee Build
Glen L sells a very simple exposed rope steering system. They also sell a small outboard throttle.. Looking really good
Re: Pee Wee Build
Now that is looking extremely cool now! I see you decided on an outboard - looks about the right size to me.
Is this the stage where you start painting everything on the inside with resin to get it all waterproof while it's all still accessible?
