getting ready to build my first boat so my son help me make a 14"&18" hand planes.

8) they look as good as any of the historical planes I have used when I was Historic Cabinet Maker here in Utah for state parks and rec the old style wood planes work just as well as the new modern ones and can be more versicle if you know how to build them you can build molding plans etc' :wink:
Don't be afraid to attempt anything. You might surprise your self in the attempt.
