Hi,

Looks like i am going to be staining the cover boards and king plank.

On the weekend i removed the excess material off the cover board to blend in with the transom at the rear, also run the router around the entire cover board to round edge over. (Still more sanding and blending to go yet).

I got a rag with water on it and wiped over the rear end of top deck...very happy with the planking timber which is very uniform in color(I Don"t mind some variation).

But the cover board and king plank is too different for my liking.
I like the reddish look on the starboard side cover board and I am thinking of trying to match the rest to it (Most of the cover board and king plank is this reddish color) if not i will go something like a walnut color???

Any thoughts?

Personally I think the reddish brown is the way to go. I think the walnut would be too much with the metalic brown sides. Looks fantastic. Your Dad OK. Sent him a PM about his drill etc but haven't heard back.

Hi,

Bought some stains on the weekend to have a bit of a play with. The stain is a water based stain called Minwax. It also recommends a wood conditioner to be applied before stain to achieve a nice even coat and absorption rate. ( I didn't worry about that for the trial as i only wanted to check the coloring).

The Mahogany looks too red and i don't think it quite works with the top deck planking.

I tried the Walnut and although it looks a bit dark in the shed i think in the sunlight it will work quite well, it goes well with the top deck planking and under the fluorescent lighting looks good.

Please forgive the rough application but it will be getting sanded back off this weekend.

I filled the seams with dry unmixed talc powder to see how it looks.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated as this is such a big decision.

I am a converted no stain man but I would try a mix of the two stains

I am like Jenko, a no stain supporter, too hard to repair. I like the light brown/dark brown combination over the light brown/red brown combination. Have you tried the combinations with black caulking?

I am not a stain person either but there is just too much variation between the timbers for my liking.

I will try a bit of mixing the two stains and see what i get but I am pretty sure i will end up going with the walnut,
Seems to have the most votes as my wife and kids voted for walnut also.

Walnut and Chris Craft red have always been good choices together. The Cordova also works well if you want to keep the cover boards cooler in the hot sun.

Hi,

Stain issue has been sorted.. i tried a different brand of stain.. i have tried a Cabbott's water based in the Walnut and the color is exactly what i was after.. color looks alot richer and deeper looking than the other brand which looked more painted on...

I have routed out for a filler strip at the top edge of transom....also cut the strip, hot water and towels on the timber and clamped it to a timber cut to the correct profile for the transom.
