Hell Cat or Tunnel King?

Post by MultiTec »

Hello, everyone :D

I'm interested in home building a 16' catamaran or tunnel hull. The Hell Cat and Tunnel King look very interesting but I would like some additional information on them.

i plan use it for a little fishing, some exploring and bombing around rivers and protected waters on a nice afternoon

Questions for both:

Whats the total carrying capacity?

usable cabin space?

how flexible is the cabin space, can seating locations and seat style be adjusted or can the deck be opened right up, what are the options?

whats the average build times?

Some feedback or reviews from owners-builders would be required before i could proceed with any plan (for a catamaran  )

like what Motor, for what top and cruse speeds, and what milages?

how are they in a high wind chop?

Thanks,

MultiTec

Welcome to the Forum !

If you mean cockpit space, the Hell Cat is probably a better fit for your intended use.

For feedback or reviews from owner-builders, many builders have provided their contact info in the Project Registry Archives. One Hell Cat, four Aqua Cat and two Tunnel King builders are listed. Emailing them may answer some of your questions about these designs.

I have fond memories of several Glen-L boats. The Hot Rod was the first. It was powered by a 427 Big Block. The Hell Cat and Aqua Cat were next on the list. The former was powered (or overpowered) by twin 1958 Evinrude 50 HP V4's. The latter was powered by a pair of 1961 Evinrude 75 HP Starflites. Both cats were the fastest and smoothest riding boats on the lake (smooth or rough water). The sound of those twin engines at WOT still haunt me to this day ...

I agree with Paul. Hell Cat for your needs. Or, You could do the Aqua Cat open.

Looks like it can carry 5 maybe 6 people. But, would be better with 4.

Build time? That depends on you. My guess about 1000 man hours.

Difficult to come up with a build time estimate.

You won't find any Tunnel King photos in the Customer Photo Archives or the Boatbuilding Galleries.

However, a search of the WebLetter Index of Articles by Subject yielded a 3 part WebLetter article on Matt Green's Tunnel King :
You'll also find a cost estimate for an Aqua-Cat in the Costs and Time To Build Page.

Hope this helps !
