Mercury Optimax 200-240 engine (no jet)

Post by Tender »

Hello all,
Lookinf to build one of the older plans but having some trouble deciding on power. Max is 200 shp for the plan I am considering. In order to get close to this number most engines are very large. While the weight isn't a problem the physical size of the power plant would be, so something compact would be better. Initially, I wanted to go with diesel but the new high speed diesel engines are ridiculously expensive. I have found the Mercury Optimax Sport Jet engine (without the jet) is probably the perfect size and would produce enough horsepower to move things along at reasonable speeds. They also seem to be more reasonably priced than the Mercury/Hino/Toyota diesels. Anybody know if these engines must be mounted horizontally or can they be mounted at an angle? One would think that being in a jet boat it wouldn't matter but would be nice to get some input from the Glen-L hive mind.

Would be helpful to know which boat you are thinking about.
