IMP conversion to sails?

Dinghies, day sailers, world cruisers. Many small sailboats make ideal rowboats or low-speed power boats.

IMP conversion to sails?

Post by Cconrad »

I am just wrapping up building the IMP which I made 11 foot (10% longer) and before I instal the seats I am thinking that it would not take a lot to add a small sail?

Anyone ever do this? Any plans available for a simple lightweight mast?

Well, I'm doing it. I'm taking the IMP, adding 10% length, adding a daggerboard, rudder, and a 10 foot lateen. I'll build the mast for the same reason I built the Oars, cause if your building a boat then I really want to build as much as possible out of wood, if practical.

Maybe take a look at the G-L 'Bull's Eye' which looks to be similar to your modified Imp...

Trick will be determining the best location of the mast with the lateen sail -- if you're not familiar with cat boats I'd spend some time looking at them to help with the balance and location of the mast -- or make it adjustable so you can move it forward/aft to 'tune' it as you sail and see how it works -- typically really good downwind, tricky upwind -- should be fun though and I agree -- oh darn another wood project!!!

isn't mast location predetermined by the boat length?

mast location is typically a function of boats center of balance compared to the sails center of effort - so the mast location could shift dependent on the style and type of sail/rigging - in this case he's proposing a lateen sail structure which works in Cat boats which have their masts almost at the bow and never carry a jib forward of the mast.

So what's the update on the imp conversion? Any pictures? J.
