Mating Engine to Mercrusier problem

Post by fordlove »

Hello all, here's my situation. I have a 1981 Sea Ray, 24ft with a 260hp 350. engine went bad, and I ordered a new from Summit. I asked specifically which engine would be a direct replacement for my year and they gave me a part number. I ordered, it arrived. Unpacked and started swapping stuff over. First issue was the intake didn't fit right, so did some research and Summit told me they send me an engine 350 1987-95 GM. They wouldn't take it back for exchange because I had it too long (2 months before I started swapping) and I unpacked it. So, intake didn't fit right, so I had to order a new one. A couple other adjustments later and I've got it mostly together. Pulled it off the engine stand, and went to install the flywheel. Would you believe that doesn't fit either? So then the mercruiser engine coupler doesn't fit either (picture below).

Anyone have any idea where I can get one that will match up to my engine with a new flywheel and will still mate up to my outdrive. I'm not sure if there's a difference between mercruiser outdrives from 81 to 85.

Thanks for the help, google isn't being nice to me today.

About that time era, chevy went from a 2-piece rear crank seal to a 1-piece seal.
with this there was a change in bolt pattern on the rear crank flange.
this also included a new bolt pattern flywheel (your coupler)
about that time there was also 2 different flywheels, a 12" and a 14" dia.
each flywheel of course required its own starter.
I am not positively certain to your block casting numbers for I.D. , but I bet your old block was 2-piece rear seal and they sold you a newer 1-piece.

Here is a link to the Sierra couplers for the mercruiser engines. One of these will match up to your outdrive.https://www.summitracing.com/parts/rra- ... gLPyvD_BwE
Would be worth calling them to insure proper fit as there are quite a few choices.
