Mercrusier 140 ,Starts, runs, and dies !

Post by Christo » Sun Oct 07, 2018 10:07 am

Mercrusier 140 2bl. carb. starts, runs fine, and dies.
Sounds like it runs out of gas.
Boat has brand new gas tank, gas lines, water separator, fuel pump that is pumping when the engine is cranking, new carb and filter.
Gas tank is venting.
What would cause this ?
Plesase advise. Thanks

It seems you've ruled out the fuel system as a cause, it's all new stuff! Maybe the check valve at the fuel line connection on the tank? The other suggestion is the ignition system. The coil may have a faulty winding that opens or shorts windings when it warms up, but goes back to normal after it cools. Or an external ballast resistor? Worst case it may be the electronic ignition module in the distributor or the condenser if a points ignition.

What do you have to do after it “dies” to get it started again?

I had that issue and found the throttle return spring was bad. replaced the spring, adjusted the idle, and all was well.
Oak is over rated, everything about it takes extra time; then it warps, splits or checks !!!

Usually I pump the throttle once and it starts.
Sometimes I just turn the key without advancing the throttle and it starts.
I did a vacume check and it was perfect.

I think you are right it is running out of gas. might have to run thru the fuel system checks again. Maybe break down the carb and check the float drop. Is the motor at an angle? that can cause gas in the float bowl to be incorrect. carb
might need a wedge plate

also check the fuel lines for small vacuum leaks. its not uncommon to have a small one that is fine and idle, but under load it sucks air and kills the motor. while your at it check the carbs/ floats/ filters and diaphrams.
