Thanks for the responses.

Had a question regarding steering. I'd initially been leaning towards something like teleflex, but am wondering if there's enough room around the transom of the squirt for the bar and linkages. Also, the old motor I bought has no attachment point. I'm sure I could fabricate something, but the handle that steering usually connects to is part of the removeable cowl rather than the motor itself, so that would complicate any kind of permanent solution I think.

I've been told by a number of people that they are unsafe, but with a small low hp boat like this are there any issues with a cable and drum setup like the one sold here on Glen L? There is a mount point on the motor for a bracket (beneath the kill switch), and I'd assume that was the purpose given how common the steering style was when the motor was built.

I had the same thoughts. My motor had the tube for the steering but none of the proper attachments to hook up the controls. I looked into it and I could "make" it work but it would have been cobbled together a bit. Also by the time I bought all the parts I was spending a lot to get something that I was not going to be happy with.

I ended up just getting a new motor, I am happy I went that way.

My wife was not super impressed but after she saw a few people floating around pulling for their life and running into stuff she changed her mind.

Warm enough to start working with epoxy again. Encapsulated the interior, continued with the top framing, and started planning out the steering. Managed to get the motor running as well.

Also a question I have, I'd like to plank the deck over plywood -- anyone have any good resources for how this is done? What thickness of wood is generally used? Especially curious for the wide bits many people do around the edges.

I resawed my material and thicknessed it to 1/4". Then I used thickened epoxy to glue it down. Be sure to clamp each edge and weigh down as needed to fully adhere it to the deck. It was slow going--one plank per day until the epoxy set and I could clamp the next one. The planks are plenty thick to aggressively sand. Looking good. Going old school on the steering, huh?

For deck planking, 3/16" to 1/4" is typical.

Yes, figured it would work with the old motor.

What would you guys recommend for decking wood? I'd like to do mahogany, but my suppliers tell me it's very difficult to get in my country due to the species being critically endangered.

Considered Ash or Cherry, as I can get them. As well as red cedar, though I know it's pretty fragile.

Otherwise I'm stuck with maple, oak, or douglas fir.

Found a source for Sapele, so I've started ripping it down to 2 inch strips.

Also continued with clean up in preparation to paint the inside prior to decking/seat/etc.

Found an old beat up Johnson remote control with Mercury cables, and have that roughed out. Getting there.

Two questions, I know marine ply is strongly preferred (and I have used it exclusively so far.) Is it considered essential for the top deck? Given it has minimal bend, and will be laminated with 1/4 Sapele, and encapsulated, I wonder if the money might be better spent elsewhere. (More than $200 a sheet now :cry: )

I've used ext. on seats and deck before. You may need to fill any voids you find.

Managed to find a better price on Marine, so I went with that to be safe.

Test fitting has shown that the inner cockpit framing and the area around the dash/frame 2 is a touch low, so I've been (slowly) fitting shims.

Waiting on Primekote before anything gets attached, as I want to paint the inside before installing the deck.

Got the shims mostly in place, and am trying to get everything fair and pre-fitted while I wait on the primer for the inside.

Also getting ready to fit my somewhat optimistic speed indicator. Sure it tops out at 2,000kms/hr, but maybe the needle will move a little.

Yes, it's out of a Bulgarian Mig 21. Older style non-powered instrument, so as long as I get a forward facing pitot tube it should work.
