Each year since 2007 a group of Glen-L boat builders or admirers has gotten together to visit and mess around in boats. The so-called Glen-L Gathering a great time to launch your boat, meet like-minded folks and to get a closer look (and maybe even a ride) on a design you are considering building.

This September we made the trek out to Dayton, Tennessee and Lake Chickamauga, site of this year’s 16th Gathering. The event took place in and around the well-appointed Blue Water Resort and Marina, with its cabins, RV sites, slips, launch ramp, and covered group picnic area.
The weather was ideal, and the people even better. A mixed fleet of Glen-L boat designs cruised and raced daily, including a long “lunch run” down to Zois in Soddy Daisy. Squirts, Zips, Malahinis, Barrelbacks, a Tahoe, a Torpedo—even a Double Eagle and an Amp-Eater spent the days exploring the lake and its tributaries, with attendees getting a chance to drive or go aboard other designs.
Lake Chickamauga—a gorgeous reservoir along the 810-mile Tennessee River—offered many hours of glass-smooth water, but it also served up some choppy, more challenging conditions that sent the smaller boats bucking.
Several days of messing about in boats culminated in a delicious catered BBQ dinner on Sunday evening. If you own, are building, or even thinking of building any of the 300+ Glen-L boat designs, you’ll want to put the next Gathering on your calendar.
