Monaco as built by John Gondek

Fri, 11 Jun 2004

Hi there,

Started construction on a revised version of the Monaco in Nov 02. I increased the height of the boat (sheer line) 3 in. to obtain additional engine space and I also decreased the height of the motor stringers 1 1/2 in. which resulted in 4 1/2 additional hull depth from deck to stringers enabling flat carpeted floors.

Construction was completed in June 03 except for flooring and finished seats. Dash and interior, as well as ribs and entire frame is constructed of American Elm with solid mahogany and marine mahogany plywood on the exterior. The boat is powered by a modified Mercruiser 302 Ford with top speeds in excess of 60MPH. The motor was repositioned 9 in. further aft which provides very comfortable operation at all speeds.

Feel free to contact me with any questions. (see Project Registry)

Barry, Attached are pictures of my "Monaco" in the water.
Imag0002 at the Dock
Imag0004 at the Dock
Imag0006 at 70MPH (yes 70)
Sorry for the quality. Hope you can use them.

Regards, John Gondek

70 mph? sounds very fast. Are you sure your speedo is working properly?
How modified is the motor?

Hi Barry,
Speed was checked with radar. Unfortunately my speedo only goes to 65. With one person (driver) and a half tank of premium fuel, motor is turning 5300 RPM, 1:1 gear, 12x15 prop.
Motor is fairly extensively modified, 306 cu in, modified heads (9.5 comp) Isky cam, 750cfm carb, producing about 380HP (at flywheel) & 380LB-FT torque.
I couldn't be happier with the way the boat performs at ALL Speeds.
Thanks, John

Attached are some better, more recent pictures of my revised Monoco. Basic Specs (forgot to previously mention):

  • O.A. Length: 19' 9" (about 5" longer than plans)
  • Actual weight: 2100 lbs. Boat should be heavier than Riviera, because of increased height - more materials?

It's a great boat and I receive many compliments.

Thanks
John
