CATEGORY: St. Pierre Dories
CONSTRUCTION: Plywood planking/wood framing
Our trailerable Ultra-Pierre is available in either Sail or Power versions. Because beam and bottom width are wider than on other narrower St. Pierre dory plans you might see, stability is enhanced, and we can incorporate a sail option with the ability to carry a generous sloop rig. The boat also gains stability through additional internal ballast and a steel plate centerboard. This latter feature makes beaching the boat practical while simplifying trailer launching and retrieval. While wood spars are detailed, aluminum extruded types are optional.
The Power version includes several motor options. You can use a well-mounted outboard with "kick-up" ability, inboard with in-line shaft and propeller drive, or inboard with the Nova Scotia dory-type "haul-up" shaft and prop option that was once common in older types. The Sail version also includes a well-mounted outboard but without the "kick-up" feature for both performance and structural reasons. In all cases, 10 to 20 horsepower is all you need regardless of motor type.
Both versions have a self-bailing cockpit. Both also use a simple, reliable, and low-cost outboard rudder, although an inboard rudder with remote steering could be adapted if desired, and such is shown for use in the case of the inboard option.
There is full-sitting headroom above the full-length v-berth and space below for a head. Construction is sheet plywood planking over straight-contoured frames of ordinary lumber, with little additional fairing required. Plans include instructions, material list, fastening schedules, and FULL SIZE PATTERNS so no lofting is required.
NOTE: If in doubt about which version you want to build, order the SAIL/POWER option which includes all the plans, instructions, etc., for both so you can make up your mind without having to re-order a dedicated package later.
"Wonderful design (Ultra Pierre) great plans and such terrific support, I couldn't be happier as a builder, and the boat performs so much better than my expectations, I'm thrilled. Even the Admiral approves (we garner so much attention on the water that our friends, who we took for a ride last evening, say it's like riding around with celebrities… everybody waves as we pass by). - Mike Morasci
