a 23' power fishing dory with a vee bottom forward
The flat bottom Pacific Coast dories are renowned for their ability to navigate shoal water, carry a load, and building simplicity. The V-DORY is an evolutionary step forward in our line of craft of this type.
The flat bottom aft has remained unchanged, as has the distinctive upsweep at the bow. But, a vee has been incorporated in the forward bottom sections for a smoother ride in a choppy sea. The raised forefoot was retained to eliminate hooking or tracking when quartering a sea or wake. The beam was increased, adding more room and greater load carrying ability. At a mere 7" of draft, the hull will support a total weight of 3250 lbs.
The forward vee bottom plywood is fully developed to bend simply in place and two layers are used to make forming even easier. All materials are readily available, using standard 4' x 8' plywood panels.
There are various power options; the standard version uses an outboard motor mounted in a well, however, complete details are provided for transom mounted outboard(s). A stern mounted motor can be used with either an I/O or outdrive, or if running in shallow water is required, a jet drive installation is also detailed. For the conventional in-line inboard power enthusiast, a centrally located conversion, or marine engine is depicted.
The hull is left wide open so you can easily make custom modifications or add a cabin from the Glen-L Dory Cabin Plans group. To balance out such modifications, a method of keeping the boat in equilibrium over the center of buoyancy is given. The hull can be lengthened or shortened a couple of feet by adding or subtracting frames in the aft section of the boat. Of course, the plans include Bill of Materials and Fastening Schedule along with progressive instructions, plus full size or half section patterns for essential parts.
