Water Pick-Ups and Impellers

Water Pickup, Thru Hull and Neovane Pump Repair Kit

The typical raw water cooled engine uses a pump driven by the engine to draw in water through a scoop or water pick-up located on the outside of the hull below the waterline. Usually the water pick-up is one size larger than the inlet of the water pump to assure adequate cooling water.

The position of the water pick-up will vary depending on the boat, but the location should be as close to the motor as possible.

In boats operating at normal speeds, the pick-up can be located at any convenient area adjacent to the motor underwater. However, on high speed boats which may leave the water and become airborn at times, the pick-up should be at the stern in a clear area where a positive flow of water will be assured.
